Dr. Sara Stock
Brookline, Massachusetts

Dr. Sara Stock's new office provides almost 1,500 square feet of space, a definite improvement over the mere 450 square feet the old office provided. The new site is in a 36 year-old building in Brookline, Massachusetts, and about a half-mile from the old office.

"The old office had only two operatories, a small sterilization room, a darkroom, and a cramped, front-desk area. It was not accessible to the handicapped, there was no room to expand, and I needed a third operatory," said Dr. Stock. "Also, the office lacked a private area where consultations, financial arrangements, and other concerns could be discussed with patients," she added. The new office includes five operatories, a consultation room, a sterilization room, a lab, a darkroom, a business office, a front desk, and waiting room.

Dr. Stock searched for a new location for six years until she found a premise that met the handicapped accessibility laws. She and her staff had outgrown the old office, and if they were going to undergo a major move, they wanted the new office to function better on a number of levels, including: increased space, an ergonomic work environment, up-to-date technology that could expand with their needs, and more operatories to improve patient flow.

"I decided to work with Sullivan-Schein Dental because of the long relationship I had with both Mark Kelly and Ed Coppelman," stated Dr. Stock. Mark Kelly is an Equipment Specialist for Sullivan-Schein Dental, based out of the Needham, Massachusetts branch, and Ed Coppelman is the companyıs Equipment Training Manager.

"Both Mark and Ed helped review possible office spaces with me over the years, and they also offered valuable advice about equipment that would suit my needs," confirmed Dr. Stock. She added, "Mark put a lot of thought into the equipment decisions. Perhaps, most importantly, he helped with the custom-cabinet design, which has proven to be efficient, attractive, and ergonomic. Mark was always available to answer any questions or concerns, and the feedback he provided in the design phase was instrumental in achieving a smooth transition from design to construction and implementation."

The new office features rear custom-cabinet units in the 12-oıclock position and assistantıs work surfaces, which Mark Kelly designed. The operatories are an ideal width for ergonomic, clinical treatment and are fully networked. High ceilings with a 3-dimensional effect provide the feeling of openness for the patients, while a window in each operatory creates a comfortable environment for patients and staff alike. "I would encourage other dentists who wish to take on a similar project [of moving their office] not to rush the design process. It is important to consider that you will be living with the office for a long time, and the design is the most important part of the process," said Dr. Stock. "I spent a lot of time designing the space, and as a result, we made only minimal changes as we progressed. I also suggest keeping future needs in mind when designing a new space."

Dr. Stock added, "My practice is growing quickly, and I hope to add another general dentist, aswell as additional equipment — such as an intraoral camera and air-abrasion system. However, I want to grow in a way such that we will not lose the intimacy of the small, neighborhood practice."
